Latin America includes the diverse regions of Central and South America, the Caribbean, and, in North America, Mexico. In this cluster, students will explore Latin America through the lens of multiple disciplines—from political and economic systems and/or historical, environmental, and social developments to achievements in literature and the arts. This interdisciplinary focus will provide the basis for a more holistic understanding of Latin America and a foundation for further studies. Touching on issues such as structures of power, representation, appropriation and adaptation, syncretism, identity, gender, ecology, and religion, students will develop an increased awareness and a more global perspective on cultural and biological differences. Fluency in Spanish, Portuguese, or French and study abroad are encouraged.
